Evaluating autism support programs in higher education through the perspectives of students, parents, counselors and staff

Research conducted through semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders indicates that Autism Support Programs (ASPs) in postsecondary institutions provide beneficial specialized support for autistic college students. These programs offer academic, social, and environmental assistance, significantly aiding students and parents in navigating the college experience, encompassing academic planning, social integration, and independent living. All participant groups reported high levels of satisfaction with ASPs.

The findings highlight the value of specialized support programs for neurodiverse students, indicating their significant positive impact on academic success, social integration, and independent living skills. This underscores the necessity for institutions to consider and potentially expand such provisions to foster inclusive educational environments and ensure equitable opportunities for all student populations.
