''Bless his heart... he thought all we did was push a button": Understanding Worker Challenges with U.S. Election Technology

A qualitative analysis of U.S. election officials highlights that technological dependencies, particularly in election technology design, introduce significant challenges to operations. These challenges, compounded by funding shortfalls and inadequate technical support, contribute to errors, fuel misleading narratives, and pose risks to official safety and public trust in electoral processes. The research, based on interviews and surveys with 50 officials across 20 states, identifies technology design as a primary factor in operational difficulties.

The findings underscore critical vulnerabilities in the operational integrity and public perception of democratic processes. Addressing these technology-related challenges is essential to maintaining the legitimacy of elections, protecting personnel, and fostering continued public confidence in governance systems.
