Artificial intelligence knowledge, perceptions, and educational needs among physician associate students in Kerala, India: a cross-sectional study

An exploratory cross-sectional study in Kerala, India, assessed Physician Associate (PA) students' knowledge, perceptions, ethical concerns, and educational needs regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. This research, conducted between June and August 2025, highlights a gap in understanding AI preparedness among healthcare students, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, despite AI's increasing integration into clinical decision support, diagnostic imaging, and digital health.

The growing integration of AI into healthcare necessitates an understanding of future healthcare professionals' preparedness and educational requirements. Identifying knowledge gaps and ethical concerns among Physician Associate students is crucial for developing effective curricula and training programs, ensuring that the workforce can effectively leverage and manage AI technologies for improved patient outcomes.
