Leadership Seminar Discussion Guide: Systems Thinking & Performance

This guide provides ten discussion prompts derived from the research of Palaima and Skaržauskienė (2010) regarding the intersection of systems thinking and leadership effectiveness in complex environments.

1. Beyond the Mechanical View

The researchers argue that organizations should be viewed as "open socio-cultural systems" rather than mechanistic models. In your current leadership role, what changes when you stop viewing your department as a machine and start viewing it as a living organism?

2. Identifying Leverage Points

Systems logic suggests that small changes in a specific "leverage point" can lead to significant, lasting improvements. Can you identify a recent organizational problem where you addressed a symptom rather than the underlying system leverage point?

3. The Power of Process Orientation

The study found that "process orientation" was the strongest predictor of leadership performance. Why might focusing on the flow of work be more effective for a leader than focusing exclusively on end-of-quarter results or individual employee traits?

4. Navigating Dynamic Complexity

Dynamic complexity occurs when the link between cause and effect is subtle and delayed over time. How can a leader maintain team morale and strategic focus when the positive results of a current intervention might not be visible for months or years?

5. Mental Models and Resistance

A core tenet of the study is the "understanding of mental models." How do the deeply ingrained assumptions of your team members prevent the adoption of new, systemic strategies? How can a leader surface and challenge these hidden beliefs?

6. Cognitive vs. Emotional Intelligence

While emotional and social intelligence are widely praised, this research suggests that systems thinking (cognitive intelligence) is a superior predictor of strategic performance. Is it possible for a leader to be "too empathetic" at the expense of understanding necessary systemic shifts?

7. The Feedback Loop Challenge

Systems thinking relies on recognizing feedback loops. In your experience, what are the "delayed feedback loops" in your industry that most often catch managers off guard? How can a systems-thinking approach help anticipate these?

8. Industry Variants in Systems Thinking

The study noted that systems thinking had a more pronounced impact in manufacturing than in retail. Why might a highly structured environment (like manufacturing) benefit more from this competency than a fast-paced, consumer-facing environment (like retail)?

9. Systems Thinking as a "Platform"

The authors describe systems thinking as a "platform" for performance. How does having a systemic worldview change the way a leader utilizes their other skills, such as communication, conflict resolution, or team building?

10. Training for Complexity

If systems thinking is a "competency" (an underlying characteristic that leads to effective performance), can it be taught in a standard corporate workshop, or does it require a more fundamental shift in how we recruit and promote leaders?
